188 dogs rescued in Hunterdon: This week in Central Jersey history, June 10-16 (2024)

One hundred and eighty-eight dogs were rescued on the morning of Tuesday, June 11, 2019, from a hoarding situation in Kingwood.

The dogs were removed from the residence by St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center and the Monmouth County SPCA.

Five years ago

June 10, 2019: A bill, under which most Central Jerseyans convicted of marijuana possession would be able to get their crimes expunged, passed the Senate by a 24-to-12 vote, and the Assembly by a 50-to-15 vote.

June 10: Gov. Phil Murphy announced at Newark Liberty International Airport that The Smithereens, Southside Johnny Lyon and "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin would be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. The induction would be held on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park.

June 11: The New Jersey Economic Development Authority approved tax breaks for four North Jersey companies ― Case Medical Inc., CIT Bank, N.A., Infobip LLC and Zipdrug Inc. ― in its final board meeting before two controversial tax incentive programs were set to expire Sunday, June 30, 2019.

June 12: It was reported The Center for Great Expectations, a women's recovery program with operations in Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties, and Downtown Metuchen Alliance, a Main Street New Jersey-certified business improvement district, received $5,000 grants from A Community Thrives, a USA TODAY NETWORK program.

June 13: In the Basilone Bowl VII football game in Bridgewater, the Devil Dogs beat the Leathernecks, 28-17. The game had raised $35,000 over the past six years for charities.

June 14: George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu on television's "Star Trek," would present, "Where No Story Has Gone Before" at the State Theatre in New Brunswick on Thursday, June 20, 2019, it was reported.

June 15: Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman, joined by Gov. Phil Murphy and other county, state and federal officials, cut the ribbon to a new 185-slip marina at the Carteret Waterfront Park.

10 years ago

June 12, 2014: It was reported Plainfield officials had agreed the previous month to settle a federal lawsuit brought by Plainfield resident Shelby Vattelle, with $25,000 to drop her complaint she was a victim of police brutality. In signing the agreement, the city did not admit any wrongdoing.

June 12: Mauvette D. Mattadeen, of Franklin, who attacked her husband with an ax and boiling-hot cooking oil, was found guilty by a Somerset County jury of aggravated assault.

June 12: Rutgers track and field athlete Corey Crawford placed second to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., where he capped his season by taking seventh and duplicating his winter track status as a First-Team All-American.

June 14: Monster Jam Path of Destruction was held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

June 15: It was reported Renée Marino of Linden would be starring as Frankie Valli's first wife in the Clint Eastwood-directed movie version of the Broadway hit, "Jersey Boys," which would open Friday, June 20, 2014.

June 16: Gov. Chris Christie joined Rutgers University President Robert Barchi to break ground on a $115 million chemistry and chemical biology building in Piscataway, financed by a 2012 bond law.

1999

June 10, 1999: A state police bomb squad disarmed what appeared to be a small bomb at a home on Route 22 in Clinton Township. No one was taken into custody.

June 10: The Somerset Patriot picked up their first home victory at Somerset County ballpark in Bridgewater, beating Lehigh Valley, 4-3.

June 11: Brian Land, 28, of Rahway, was sentenced to at least 30 years on aggravated arson and felony murder charges, for setting a fire at his home that killed three relatives in 1997.

June 11: Brooks & Dunn opened for Trace Adkins and Deryl Dodd at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.

June 13: During the annual night of mischief, graduating seniors from Montgomery High School put a truckload of manure on the front steps of the high school and a deer carcass hanging from a flagpole.

June 15: The trial of Allan Franklin Sr., 37, accused of shooting and bludgeoning Isiac Warmack, 64, of Orange, to death, while he slept with his estranged wife Annie in her Carteret home, opened in New Brunswick.

June 16: Six months after its debut, sales of the first approved Lyme disease vaccine were lagging as many doctors and health officials adopted a wait-and-see attitude toward Lymerix, which was approved only for ages 15 to 70, it was reported.

1974

June 10, 1974: Three robbers made off with $10,000 after holding up the North Plainfield State Bank at Rock Avenue and Route 22.

June 11: The Plainfield Foundation reported the total distributions in 1973 were $51,889 to 29 charitable, civic, religious and educational organizations in Plainfield, North Plainfield and vicinity.

June 11: In the Plainfield Twilight Baseball League, Essel's beat Club Cosmo, 2-1.

June 13: Police shut down the Fairway Cinema in Madison, confiscating the reels of X-rated "Deep Throat" and "The Devil in Miss Jones."

June 14: Fire, which began that night and continued into the early morning, destroyed eight of 14 stores housed in one of the two main shopping center buildings at the Carteret Shopping Center in Carteret.

June 15: A sparse crowd of about 4,000, most in their teens and early 20s, awaited the arrival of the Climax Blues Band, Elton John and Sly and the Family Stone at Raceway Park in Madison.

1924

June 11, 1924: William Rener, of New Brunswick, motorman of the Middlesex trolley car involved in a collision at Dunham's Hill the day before, died at Middlesex Hospital.

June 11-12: The movie, "Under the Red Robe," starring Alma Rubens and John Charles Thomas, and based on Stanley Weyman's novel, was shown at Reade's Strand Theatre in Perth Amboy.

June 12: Five fishermen at the Raritan River near the Riverside Park dam found the body of a woman and notified the New Brunswick police. There was no indication of foul play.

Jan. 14: Thieves entered the haberdashery store of Gannon and Sheehy in Perth Amboy and stole $4,500 worth of clothing, consisting of almost 200 suits of men's clothing valued at $25 each.

June 16: The Old Bridge baseball team made it seven straight when it defeated the Dunham's Corner nine, 14-5, and won the second by a score of 9-0, because the Tigers of South River would not abide by a decision of the umpire.
