This camping guacamole recipe is one of my go to camping snacks, especially if the kiddos are going camping with us. They completely devour fresh guacamole with crunchy tortilla chips.

Anyone worth their salt in guacamole making skills knows that you can’t go wrong with the classic. Avocados, onion, cilantro, minced garlic, lime juice and plenty of salt and pepper. But after years of perfecting my guac skills I have a few opinions on two excellent additions.

#1 Bacon.

If you haven’t tried bacon in your guacamole before then you are missing out because it’s fantastic. Salty and crunchy. I mean it’s bacon it’s hard to mess up anything by adding it.

This recipe calls for bacon mixed in the guacamole and them to top it with a few crispy crumbles right on top to keep it crunchy.

#2 Sun dried tomatoes.

I know it sounds totally strange but hear me out and give it a shot.

Chop them up well so you just get a chewy little pop of flavor in there. If you hate it when people add salsa or tomatoes in your guacamole don’t worry, this is nothing like that atrocity. It’s just a tiny pop of sweetness more akin to a dried cranberry in a salad than a tomato.

I like the bagged sun dried tomatoes and not the ones packed in oil personally.

How do you pick a ripe avocado?

The hardest part of this recipe is choosing ripe avocados. When you’re at the store staring at that pile of avocados how do you choose? Start with the color, the darker the avocado skin, the older the avocado.

Next give the vegetable a light squeeze, if there is a little give or softness to the avocado that indicates it’s ripe. You can then remove the stem of the avocado. If it comes off easily and has a nice green underneath it is ripe. If the stem will not easily release it is usually underripe. And if the stem is already off or it is brown underneath when you remove the stem it is likely overripe and will be brown and mushy.

How healthy is guacamole?

We eat avocados every day because of the good fats and the significant amounts of Vitamins A and C. Avocado are the main ingredient in guacamole and are called a superfood for it health benefits. Avocados are full of nutrients like Vitamins K, C, B5, B6, E, folate, potassium, A, B1, B2, B3, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and phosphorus.

Can camping guacamole be made ahead of time?

This recipe can be made ahead of time or at your campsite. Store the guacamole in an airtight container in your refrigerator or ice chest.

How long can you leave guacamole at room temperatures?

Guacamole can be left out unrefrigerated for two hours as long as the temperature is lower than 90 degrees F. If it’s 90 degrees or above then the dip can only be left out for one hour. Then return the guacamole to the refrigerator or ice chest. It rarely lasts more than 10 minutes so this really shouldn’t be much of an issue!

What can you dip in your guacamole?

You can use tortilla chips, and thinly sliced vegetables to dip in it. Pita bread is another excellent dipping choice.

FAQs

What makes guacamole taste better? ›

If you taste your guac and it is bland, start with more salt. Next, add lime juice. Often an additional pop of citrus is all guac needs to come alive and taste better. If you still aren't happy with the taste, you can rely on mix-ins to jazz it up.

What kind of onion is best for guacamole? ›

Most people prefer to use sweet white onion in their guacamole recipe. Red or yellow onion tends to give the guacamole too strong of a garlic flavor.

Does olive oil prevent guacamole from turning brown? ›

The next time you make guac, just spray the top with some vegetable oil, coconut oil, or olive oil spray, then cover it in plastic wrap. It should stay green for up to 24 hours, according to PureWow.
