I’m SO excited to share my latest “getting ready for baby” project with you- DIY burp cloths with heat transfer vinyl and my Cricut machine!
Did you know that you can dress up those plain white burp cloths from the store in just a few minutes, and with absolutely NO sewing?
I wanted some cute custom baby girl burp cloths but didn’t want to spend tons of money on buying them.
I bought a bag of my favorite Gerber burp cloths that are nice and thick, then got to work creating a couple of cute designs to cut out of heat transfer vinyl with my Cricut machine.
You can use a Cricut Explore or Cricut Maker for this project!

SUPPLIES:
- Gerber burp cloths, 10 Count
(I use these Gerber ones because they are nice and thick, are great quality, and are inexpensive) - Heat transfer vinyl (I use Cricut Iron On)- in your favorite colors- I used gold foil iron-on, pink iron-on, and black iron-on
- Cricut Explore Air 2 Machineor Cricut Maker
- Cricut Easy Press (optional) or an iron

STEP 1. Go to Cricut Design Space to get my free design.
You can press “Customize” to edit my design or just click “Make It” to make it just like mine.
Place the iron on material onto your mat shiny side down.
Turn on your Cricut machine, adjust the setting on the machine to “Iron-On,” then follow the prompts to cut out the design.
Usually you would have the machine cut the mirror image when using heat transfer vinyl, but since the hearts are all symmetrical, it didn’t matter for this project (so I didn’t doit).
STEP 2. Once the hearts are all cut out, use your weeding tool to remove the negativevinyl from around the hearts, so that just the hearts are left on the plastic sheet.
Cut the plastic in half so that you have two strips of hearts that are 2 hearts wide on each strip.
This is how wide the burp cloth middle section is, so cutting into the strips will make the hearts fit perfectly!
STEP 3. The Cricut EasyPress is the BEST way to adhere the iron-on vinyl to the burp cloth because it creates a much better bond than an iron and will last much longer.
That being said, an iron will work too.
I LOVE my EasyPress and use it all the time!
If using the Cricut EasyPress, turn the machine on and adjust the settings depending on which type of Iron-On you are using.
For the Iron-On Lite on the cotton burp cloths, the settings will be 305 degrees for 30 seconds.
For the Gold Foil Iron-On on the cotton burp cloths, the settings will be 295 degrees for 35 seconds.
Once your machine isheated up,pre-heat the burp cloth so that the heat transfer vinyl adheres well.
Do this by placing a towel or cloth under the burp cloth, then place the EasyPress where the first set of hearts will go in the middle of the burp cloth for 3-5seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture.
Place the hearts, plastic liner side up, onto the bottom section in the middle of the burp clothso it’s nice and straight.
Place the EasyPress over the vinyl iron-on hearts, then press the Cricut “C” button to start the time on the EasyPress.
When the machine beeps, remove the EasyPress.
Let cool before removing the plastic lining.
Repeat step 3 tofinish therestof the burp cloth.
STEP 4. If using an iron, set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting, and make sure that the steam setting is OFF.
Iron the bottom middle area of the burp cloth that will have the hearts on it for 10-15 seconds.
Place the hearts, plastic liner side up, onto the bottom section in the middle of the burp clothso it’s nice and straight.
Apply medium pressure with the iron for 25-30 seconds.
Flip the burp cloth over and repeat by applying pressure with the iron for another 25-30 seconds.
Let cool, then remove the plastic lining.
Repeat step 4 to finish the rest of the burp cloth.
