Will you please listen to my side of the story and tell me if you are still opposed to them? I don't know about you, but I feel really let down when I see an envelope with the name of someone I haven't heard from in ages, and I open it up and find a printed message with a signature, "Love, Helen." And that's it. I would just love to receive a mimeographed letter with some news in it. Even if there was some bragging, I wouldn't mind. Every year, I send about 150 newsletters telling family and friends what I have been doing all year.
Any recipient who doesn't respond with some comment is dropped from my list the next year. Invariably, I hear from those who have been dropped, asking, "How come didn't get your newsletter this year?" So, dear Ann, what's a person to do? G.B., Cincinnati DEAR CIN: It was not engraved on the Rosetta Stone, "Thou shalt not send Christmas newsletters." A great many people love to get them. Perhaps the fact that I receive about 2,000 pieces of mail a day has something to do with my aversion. So please don't use me as the norm. If you took a poll, I'm sure the majority would vote, "Yes send them." DEAR ANN LANDERS: Several months ago, "Claire" asked me to baby-sit her young son while she attended an afternoon wedding.
She brought the child to my house, gave me a phone number where I could reach her in case of an emergency, and said she would be back late in the afternoon. I expected her at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., but she didn't show up. At 7 p.m., I became concerned. By 9 p.m., I was a nervous Wreck.
Several times, I phoned the number she had given me "In case of emergency," but it was a wrong number. I then tried every reception hall in the area without success. I stayed up all night, worried sick, imagining all sorts of terrible things. Claire finally arrived at 5 a.m. She said she was sorry to be so late, but she had to drive several people home from the reception at the bride's request.
I was so upset, I told her I would never baby-sit for her again. A few hours later, Claire phoned to apologize, but I was exhausted and still furious. I said, "I'm too upset to talk," and hung up. Now that I've cooled down, I think maybe I shouldn't have cut her off like that, but I was really angry that she showed so little consideration for me. Should I apologize, or should she? It's been four months.
